The King of the Aquarium. Discus are prized for their round body shape, vibrant patterns, and peaceful demeanour. We stock a wide range of colour strains and sizes.
Discus are intermediate-to-advanced fish. They need pristine water (nitrate under 10ppm), warm temperatures (28–30°C), soft acidic water (pH 6.0–7.0 ideally) and frequent large water changes. Healthy captive-bred UK Discus from a trusted source are much more forgiving than wild-caught specimens.
A minimum of 200L for a shoal of 6 adults — Discus are shoaling cichlids and stress in smaller groups. Height matters: at least 45cm tall to accommodate their body shape. Larger tanks (300L+) dilute waste better and give more stable water chemistry.
Tankmates must tolerate warm, soft water. Cardinal Tetras, Rummy Nose Tetras, Sterbai Corydoras and L046 Zebra Plecos are traditional Discus companions. Avoid fast or fin-nippy fish that outcompete Discus at feeding time.
Traditional Discus keeping relies on 50% weekly water changes, sometimes more for growing fry. Stable keepers may get away with 30% weekly once the tank is mature and lightly stocked. Always dechlorinate and temperature-match incoming water.
No, but plants help. Amazon Swords, Anubias and Vallisneria tolerate the warm water Discus prefer and give cover that reduces stress. Bare-bottom breeding tanks are common too, trading aesthetics for easier cleaning and better growth rates.
